The Up Key pushes him up and softens his landing while the Down Key is not used in the Mario Lost Space - as he already moves down in freefall.

In Super Mario Lost Space, you have to land precisely at the center of the tower. And it has to be in a relatively slow speed or he will crash. You can reduce Super Mario game acceleration by pressing the up button. Make sure that he's heading straight down on tower to ensure safe landing.

There are boulders and rocks floating around the open space. He can't touch them or he'll crash and lose his life. It is possible to try several times in this game until you reach the end level.
